Bear Creek Greenway

The day after our biggest climbing ride of the year (so far) we decided to do a relatively flat ride. The weather in Central Point was 80s and sunny. How can you not go on a ride when it is that nice?

Quick Stats
Ride Distance: 41 miles
Elevation Gain: 826 feet
Average Moving Speed: 15.71 mph

We first decided to explore if the Greenway path had been extended to the north, and how far. There is a new little mini-parking lot on Peninger Road just south of Upton Road, and we thought maybe the trail goes north from there. It does. Sadly, it only goes about a mile though, to another little mini-parking lot. You could probably continue to ride north on the chipseal road, but we'd had enough chipseal for a lifetime the day before, so we turned around and went on to Ashland.

RIDE DATA:

We probably pushed it harder than we should have, considering the difficult prior day ride. But it was just so nice and enjoyable we couldn't help it.

We had ridden this path a couple years ago and had hoped they had done some maintenance work on some bumpy stretches, where the tree roots push the pavement up and make for decidedly harsh bumps. I did notice some areas where they clearly had done some pavement grinding to smooth things out, but there are still quite a few stretches of tree-root-bumps. Probably even more than two years ago. The hard part about many of them was the fact that they are located in a shady area. So you are riding along in the sun and can hardly see anything in a shaded area ahead, so sometimes the bumps would sneak up on you. Many of them were marked with bright green paint, which was much appreciated.

It was a very warm ride. It was pure joy to just wear shorts and a shirt and not have to deal with arm or leg warmers nor a jacket. We did put on the sunscreen though, which was very much put to use!
