Had a blessed tailwind the first half of the ride. Made our initial climb up 7 mile hill quicker than it was 3 weekends ago. However, it wasn't crazy quick. Time of year matters in our cycling fitness, and last season in August, when we are basically at our peak fitness, we climbed the hill just a tad faster, even without the aid of wind. I threw in last year's June climb as well, which was just a touch faster than our early May climb this year.

Saw lots of wildlife on the ride. Several different deer sightings, my favorite of which was looking straight down into a ravine where a doe was bedded down in the tall weeds, thinking she was out of sight, but tall weeds don't really obscure much when you are looking from above. Also saw a coyote. Both Mike and I yipped at him a few times. And finally, something that is becoming much less rare than it used to be, Amy and I each saw a different wild turkey.
My experiment with meat sticks to get more sodium seems to have been a success. I ate one about every hour for about 250 to 300 mg of sodium. I ate and drank throughout the ride a little more than usual, although still probably not quite enough. I did experience some minor cramping in my calves and hamstrings, in both cases a first for me, but each time it would go away after a big gulp of Gatorade. Even so, I think I should add an Endurolyte capsule or two, perhaps timed before or after each meat stick, to supplement electrolytes even further. Probably easier to mix the Endurolyte powder in with my Perpetuem, though I don't want it to be salty!
The last part of the ride we had a stiff wind in our faces. It was difficult, no doubt, but in the end I think the wind was a net positive for the ride as a whole. My average speed was almost a full 1 mph faster than last year.
