Covered Bridge Bicycle Tour

Today's ride was about as opposite as you can get from last weekend's ride.

Quick Stats
Ride Distance: 99.36 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,149 feet
Average Moving Speed: 16.68 mph

Last weekend was all about climbing. Today there were no sustained grades, and only minimal climbing. Most of the day was just pedal, pedal, pedal! In a way this was our 40-mile Throbbing Thigh Thriller training ride stretched out over a hundred miles.

RIDE DATA:

I think it is odd that even with all of our hill training in preparation for last weekend my legs were feeling it on today's very flat ride. But when you break it down, it actually makes sense. Climbing is hard, but then there is usually an extended break from pedaling when you descend. And those descending miles are part of your century too. But without much descending you have to pedal, pedal, pedal the whole time.

My legs aren't used to it, but in the end they did fine. In fact toward the end of the ride we decided to push it in order to complete the century in less than 6 hours of moving time, which we just barely did. We rode it significantly faster than the first time we did this ride when we had a moving speed of 15.95 mph (vs. today's 16.68 mph). Of course that was our first year of riding, so one would hope we could ride it faster two years later...

After the ride they served us root beer floats, which I thought was great. Amy was disappointed, though, apparently not being a fan of root beer floats.

Perfect weather for the ride. Just cool enough that I started with arm/leg warmers, but the sun was out before too long, and the high was only in the mid 70s. Perfect.
